Mental Health Counselor Job Responsibilities

Complete a thorough diagnostic assessment.

Provide individual and group psychotherapy.

Provide crisis intervention as needed.

Responsible for collaborating with clients and clinical team in developing an individualized treatment plan that will specifically address identified areas of concern.

Responsible for assisting clients and in understanding ways to effectively manage symptoms and behaviors attributed to the identified behavioral health diagnosis (es).

Assists clients in addressing complex personal and environmental difficulties which could interfere with effective social functioning.

Is able to work independently, is well organized, and identifies opportunities to work collaboratively with other staff within the agency.

Participates as a collaborative member of the clinical team and community agencies.

Provide crisis and de-escalation techniques.

Assure documentation is completed in compliance with agency requirements.

Attend required meetings including individual and group supervision, treatment team meeting.

Maintain an active Ohio certification and/or license, in good standing with the state board.

Perform duties in accordance with applicable professional ethics and standards.

Comply with all state and federal laws regarding protected health information.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform job duties in a manner that’s friendly, considerate, and aligned with the agency’s Mission, Vision, and Standards of Ethical Conduct.
  • Organize and plan work for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Utilize IT system and software programs in accordance with agency policy.
  • Utilize time off in a manner consistent with agency policy.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Ability to learn and utilize the agency’s Electronic Health Record database and other electronic tools effectively and efficiently within 90 days of hire.
  • Demonstrate a current knowledge of substance use practices.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and customer services skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of community resources and partnerships available for persons served.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Possess and demonstrate effective organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to customarily and regularly exercise discretion and good professional judgment.

SUD Counselor Job Qualifications

  •  LSW or higher required
  •  Valid Driver’s License
  •  Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen and TB test
  •  Successful completion of Local and BCI Background Check
